Wall printing vs hand-painted murals: which is right for you?

Cost, speed, detail, and longevity — a head-to-head comparison from a studio that has done both.

Hand-painted murals have soul. Before we ever touched a wall printer, members of our team worked alongside traditional mural artists, and we have deep respect for the craft. But we're often asked to compare the two approaches honestly — so here it is, from a studio that has done both.

Speed. A hand-painted mural of any real size takes days to weeks, plus drying time and often scaffolding. A printed wall of the same size typically finishes in hours. For businesses, that difference is measured in downtime: a restaurant that can stay closed for one day, not ten, saves real money.

Detail. Photographic images, smooth gradients, and fine line work are extremely difficult to execute by hand at scale. The printer renders them natively — anything you can create on a computer, you can put on a wall, at up to 1440 dpi equivalent quality.

Repeatability. Need the same brand mural in twelve branches? Hand-painting means twelve interpretations. Printing means twelve identical, brand-perfect installs. For franchises and corporate rollouts, this alone often settles the question.

Cost. For most projects, printing comes in well below the cost of a commissioned hand-painted mural of equivalent size, because the majority of the work happens once — in the digital file — rather than on a scaffold.

Longevity. Both approaches are durable when properly finished. Our prints use UV-stable inks, and outdoor work receives a protective clear coat rated for sun and rain. Expect years of service in both cases; printed walls are easier to refresh or replace when a brand evolves.

Where hand-painting still wins. If you want visible brushwork, an artist's signature style, or a piece of art whose creation is part of the story — hire a muralist. Some projects deserve the human hand.

Our honest take: most hospitality, retail, and corporate clients choose printing for speed, detail, and consistency. Most collectors and art-led spaces still choose painters. The right answer depends on what your wall is for.
